They are both better than their middle sibling Moondance, at its best, offers as close as possible to a synthesis of the strengths of these two, but like most such hybrids, it can’t go as far as either. In a way it’s weirdly fitting that 1968’s Astral Weeks and 1970’s His Band and the Street Choir, released before and after Morrison’s biggest commercial triumph Moondance, are being reissued together.
